Being: Mental Health and Wellbeing Consumer Advisory group is looking for 12 mental health consumers that are willing to participate in an interview about their journey and experiences of living with a mental illness and accessing mental health services in the South Eastern area of NSW.

Coordinare – the South Eastern NSW Primary Health Network has commissioned Being to collect these stories from consumers to highlight areas of strength and weakness within the mental health care system to ensure the regional strategy for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention is consumer focused. These stories will be used by Coordinare at various events and planning workshops to advocate for consumers and their families.

Participants will be interviewed in a relaxed manner, at a time and place of their choosing by a fellow consumer. The mental health services can be inpatient, public outpatient, out patients in a community mental health service, Aboriginal mental health services, Headspace, emergency departments, private psychologists, antenatal/perinatal mental health services, and people who may not have been able to access an appropriate service so are not currently using a service.

People from diverse backgrounds eg. age, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, diagnoses and severity, ATSI and LGBTIQ. People who have co-existing drug and alcohol issues; physical health issues; and psychosocial issues are encouraged to participate to make sure all consumer types are represented. Participants from a range of different areas within the region, rural, coastal, regional, and metro Wollongong are also needed. (A list of suburbs is attached below).

The interviews will be conducted from the end of August through to October.

An expression of interest form is attached. We need to find participants as soon as possible. People interested need to email the expression of interest from to or fax to 02 9332 0299. Being will contact each potential participant to discuss whether they would fit within the project, and to discuss when an interview time can be arranged.

Could you please distribute this email through your network, and identify and approach clients who you think would be willing to participate in this project?
